| Northern Europe's Christmas markets highlight river tour | | Posted Sunday, February 04, 2007 3:05:00 PM by Blog57 Team | | Decorated half-timbered stalls crowd streets with lights and pine boughs. Locals and tourists munch their way through town enjoying cakes, sausage, mulled wine, baked apples and other regional goodies, while outdoor musicians perform impromptu concerts. What's the big event? The "Christmas markets" phenomenon, from the end of November through Christmas Eve, in cities throughout Europe. The earliest such market took place in Dresden in 1434, when villagers came to buy their holiday birds and roasts on Christmas Eve. Some years later, through the city's generosity, free gluhwein (mulled wine) and stollen (Christmas cake) were distributed to the poor at the annual event. No freebies today -- only euros, please -- but there's something to fit everyone's budget at the colorful markets.... | |

Its Saturday morning and Im sitting just inside the Salt Palace convention center, waiting for the evil looking security folks to let me through to see all of the cool gear! Grrrr!!! Daniel and Helette havent shown up yet, or they are here and are registering for the show. Ill catch up with them later. Ive got a couple of appointments first thing this morning, but then I have a bit of free time before I catch up with David at the Mammut booth! Unlike the last show, I do not have appointments at every available second, so I hope to do some more window shopping at this show- just sort of check out more random booths! I love the energy at this show- Ive already bumped into a couple of friendly faces, and despite the viscous cold (it was 12F when I got here last night, and I think it might be colder than that this morning), everyone seems very excited about the upcoming show....

The semiannual Outdoor Retailer show, held in Salt Lake City in October, had 724 U.S. manufacturers displaying goods for retailers from around the world. The show featured the latest advances in apparel and gear and would make an avid consumer drool, but the public wasn't allowed inside and manufacturers took only bulk orders for sale. Here's a look at some of the latest outdoor gear and clothing....
