Starting Jan. 28, the University will participate in RecycleMania, an annual 10-week contest in which over 130 colleges will attempt to maximize recycling while producing the least amount of waste. To encourage students to recycle in coming weeks, the Yale Student Taskforce for Environmental Partnership plans to host a RecycleMania rally at Beinecke Plaza, announce weekly trivia questions and give awards to Yalies “caught" recycling. C.J. May, the head of Yale Recycling, said Yale has a mixed record on conservation, and he compared the University's efforts to Clint Eastwood's “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." “‘The Good' is that we recycle more than 1,000 tons of paper and other items each year," May said in an e-mail....

| | | What's New? Subway to open new store | | Posted Monday, November 27, 2006 1:17:20 PM by Blog57 Team | | The denizens of Doña Ana can look forward to another place to eat in the not-too-distant future. Charlene Salopek, who along with her son Mac Griffin co-owns Subso Inc., which runs the Subway restaurants in the Las Cruces area, said that they hope to open another eatery next year in Doña Ana. "We're looking at putting in a new store," she said. "We want to expand as Las Cruces expands," Griffen told me before about the company's plans. A Subway in Doña Ana would give Subso eight in the area, including one in Santa Teresa. The original Subway in Las Cruces was located on El Paseo Road and opened in the late 1980s. It has since been closed and replaced by the store at Utah Avenue. The company currently employees about 85 workers at its stores. Worldwide, Subway has 26,790 restaurants in 85 countries, according to its Web site, www.subway.com.... | |

| | | ZUNE MP3 PLAYER DEBUTS: Microsoft's chief sings sunny tune | | Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 11:20:19 AM by Blog57 Team | | Microsoft Corp. Chief Executive Steve Ballmer says he can break the dominance of Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod in the digital music market with the Zune player that hit U.S. stores Tuesday. "We can beat them, but it's not going to be easy," Ballmer said. Zune is Microsoft's first attempt to thrust itself into the $4 billion U.S. digital music device market controlled by Apple's iPod. The world's largest software company marked the release with free concerts by artists including rapper T.I. and rock group Red Hot Chili Peppers that were aimed at solidifying Zune's credentials among music fans. "The market will have two big players for a long time, us and Apple," said Ballmer. "Obviously we're the David in this one. Apple's the Goliath." Zune will sell for $249.99 in the U.S., the same price as an iPod with comparable storage space, and will compete with new video iPods released in September.... | |

| | | Get growing A column by Allen Boger: Get Growing Trimming trees requires trained experts | | Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 11:31:18 PM by Blog57 Team | | I answered my doorbell recently and found a man with a pleasant smile who was in the neighborhood trimming trees and noticed that I had several "dangerous" tree limbs that he felt should be immediately removed. His sales pitch was that since he was in the neighborhood, he could save me lots of money by taking care of "my problems" while he was there. I noticed his truck was parked nearby, but it lacked a sign identifying his employer, and the only visible signs of equipment were a rope, chainsaw and ladder. Fear and the prospect of saving money are great motivators. But since I remembered he had approached me about the same trees over a decade earlier, I passed on his offer again and shut the door. Hiring someone to work on your trees is a decision that should not be taken lightly.... | |

Rob Muranyi has signed an agreement that allows the dome to remain in Fitchburg on Highway PD near Verona Road for the next four months. After that, the business will be forced to move because of the development of the Orchard Pointe shopping center. Muranyi bought the dome last year from Chris Peterson but Peterson retained the land for development. Construction of a 175,000-square-foot SuperTarget, which includes a full grocery store, began last week. Developers are eyeing the land occupied by the golf dome for other businesses, which could include a bank, restaurants and other retail stores, said Tom Hovel, Fitchburg's zoning administrator and city planner....
