AURORA -- After hearing from a pair of fired-up residents Tuesday night (Jan. 16), aldermen voted to send a law banning grills on outdoor balconies to the Government Operations Committee for review. The rule, which states that open-flame grills are not to be operated on combustible balconies in multi-family buildings, was adopted in Aurora as part of the International Fire Code in 2001. Fire Marshal Gary Pozzi has stepped up enforcement of the law recently, sending letters to owners of multi-unit complexes. Pozzi said there have been 20 grill fires in Aurora since 2005, resulting in more than $1 million in damages and three injured firefighters. Though the law has been on the books for five years, Fox Valley Villages resident Nick Jarmusz said he only heard about it last month, when he found a notice tacked to his door....

Over the past decade, there have been at least 12 instances in which children were burned after touching the exposed metal of worn-out childproof grills used to cover fan heater exhausts, according to the results of an investigation by the National Consumer Affairs Center. Nine of the 12 cases involved infants. The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry launched an investigation Thursday into whether there were any other similar occurrences. If problems are found with the products, the ministry plans to ask the grill manufacturers to submit reports on the accidents. The protective metal grills, which are coated with heat-resisting fiber, are to be installed over the exhausts of fan heaters to protect children and animals from hot air. They are priced between about 3,000 yen and 5,000 yen at major retail stores....

Balkan Grills

Any words we need to know? Cevapcici - small, square-edged "sausages"; raznjici - grilled meat "shashliks"; pola pola ("half-half") - a mix of both dishes. On the side? Balkan salads (cabbage and potato; feta, tomato, cucumber). Balkan Continental With its one-time sister restaurant (Balkan Seafood) two doors down, the sizzling, smoking street-front grills of these Croatian-styled Oxford Street establishments set the tone for Balkan eating in Sydney about 40 years ago. A Darlinghurst-ish makeover or two later, they are still doing the business - churning out their signature platters of cevapcici, raznjici, mixed meats and seafood (from $20), unfailingly accompanied by a salad of shredded cabbage, potato chunks and lots of onion. Used to be that you got sliced white bread with foil-wrapped butter....

Join the revolution--order beer with dessert

Brent Wertz doesn't flinch as he twists open a bottle of ultra-light, low-carb beer and pours it straight down the middle of a chardonnay glass. He tilts his head only slightly as he watches it splash big at the bottom. Wertz says the big splash is necessary to break the carbonation and to open the nose of the beer. Stemmed glass? Nose? Beer? That's a big "yes" from Wertz, executive chef at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg. He plans menus around beer, marinates and cooks with it, and passionately recommends beer when dining plain or fancy. That's a big "whoa" from me. In the bigger picture, does drinking beer with dinner mean I have to put keggers behind me? Beer has been a beverage of choice in this area of the country since colonial times....

With the help of high-tech, high-speed wizardry, local election results were counted and posted before the crowd at the courthouse could even put a dent in all the goodies that courthouse employees had worked so hard to provide. With 20,515 voters currently registered in Ripley County, 41.89%, or 8,593 ballots were cast, up 1.3% from 2002 mid-terms. In 2002, there were 19,451 registered voters, out of which 7,895, or 40.59% actually cast a ballot. Interestingly, Republicans crossed party lines in this mid-term election more often than other voters. Those voting a straight Republican ticket totaled 1,282 or 57.88% this year, whereas in 2002 midterms 1,079 or 63.47% voted the straight party line. Conversely, Democrats voted more along party lines this year than in 2002....

No matter how unhappy they might be privately, both tradition and political good sense dictate that directors of city departments are expected to tell the New Orleans City Council each fall they are satisfied with the number of dollars and staff members allocated to them in the budget submitted by the mayor. But when Mike Centineo, director of the Safety and Permits Department, tried to follow that tradition Friday, he came under virtual assault from council members, who made clear they think expanding Centineo's staff is essential to the city's continued recovery and that they want him to demand the same thing. Later, under questioning by council members, the directors of the city's two main preservation agencies broke with the tradition almost completely....

DILI: East Timor questioned yesterday former prime minister Mari Alkatiri a few weeks after a UN report called for a deeper probe into allegations that he had armed civilians during a wave of violence in May. Alkatiri, who was forced to resign in June, was widely blamed for the violence that erupted after fighting within the armed forces spiralled into rioting and looting in the streets of the capital, Dili. Alkatiri, who heads the political party dominant in parliament, denies any wrong-doing. The chaos in May killed more than 30 people and displaced over 15,000 from their homes. “Some people want to have an outside trial...," Alkatiri told reporters, without elaborating. “But we should let our judiciary do its job, have faith in it and believe in ourselves," he said after being questioned by prosecutor Felismino Cardoso....

Outback Steakhouse operator OSI Restaurant Partners Inc. said Monday it agreed to a $3.2 billion buyout from a consortium of investors, lifting the stock in premarket trading. The company also said it is restating financial results because of an understatement in gift card and certificate liabilities and that it will likely be late in filing its third-quarter results. The $40-per-share cash buyout bid, which includes assumed debt, comes from a group including Bain Capital Partners LLC and Catterton Partners and Co. founders Chris T. Sullivan, Robert D. Basham and J. Timothy Gannon. The offer represents a premium of 23 percent to the company's closing price Friday of $32.43. In premarket trading, OSI shares surged $7.07, or 21.8 percent, to $39.50. OSI's board of directors has unanimously approved the deal and is recommending the deal to shareholders....
